Preserving Eileen Gray’s own house in Menton, Côte d’Azur
TEMPE À PAILLA
Tempe à Pailla entstand auf den Grundmauern eines älteren Gebäudes oberhalb der Côte d’Azur. Eileen Gray entschied sich bewusst für dieses anspruchsvolle Gelände mit seinen historischen Zisternen, steilen Terrassen und dem weiten Blick auf Meer und Berge.
Das Haus wurde nicht als repräsentative Villa entworfen, sondern als Ort des täglichen Lebens. Architektur und Einrichtung greifen unmittelbar ineinander. Schränke, Tische, Leuchten und bewegliche Elemente wurden eigens für die Räume entwickelt und bilden gemeinsam ein sensibles System aus Nutzung, Licht und Bewegung.
Tempe à Pailla was built on the foundations of an older structure overlooking the Côte d’Azur. Eileen Gray deliberately chose this demanding site with its historic cisterns, steep terraces and expansive views of the sea and mountains.
The house was not conceived as a representative villa, but as a place for everyday living. Architecture and interior design are directly interwoven. Cabinets, tables, lighting fixtures and movable elements were designed specifically for the spaces, together forming a sensitive system of use, light and movement.
Tempe à Pailla fut construit sur les fondations d’un bâtiment plus ancien dominant la Côte d’Azur. Eileen Gray choisit délibérément ce terrain exigeant avec ses citernes historiques, ses terrasses escarpées et sa vue étendue sur la mer et les montagnes.
La maison n’a pas été conçue comme une villa représentative, mais comme un lieu de vie quotidienne. L’architecture et l’aménagement intérieur y sont étroitement liés. Placards, tables, luminaires et éléments mobiles ont été spécialement conçus pour les espaces et forment ensemble un système subtil d’usage, de lumière et de mouvement.
Die Landschaft war für Eileen Gray nicht Hintergrund, sondern Teil der Architektur. Terrassen, Fenster und Wege wurden so angelegt, dass sich Licht, Wind, Vegetation und Ausblicke kontinuierlich verändern. Das Haus öffnet sich zum Mittelmeer ebenso wie zu den Bergen des Hinterlands und reagiert sensibel auf Klima, Tageszeit und Jahreszeiten.
Tempe à Pailla entstand als Ort der Konzentration und des Rückzugs — eng verbunden mit seiner mediterranen Umgebung.
Unlike many proponents of classical modernism, Gray did not regard architecture as an abstract machine, but as a precise response to individual needs, habits and bodily experience.
For Eileen Gray, the landscape was not a backdrop but an integral part of the architecture. Terraces, windows and pathways were designed so that light, wind, vegetation and views continually shift and evolve. The house opens equally toward the Mediterranean and the mountains of the hinterland, responding sensitively to climate, time of day and the changing seasons.
Tempe à Pailla was conceived as a place of concentration and retreat — closely connected to its Mediterranean surroundings.
Contrairement à de nombreuses positions du modernisme classique, Gray ne concevait pas l’architecture comme une machine abstraite, mais comme une réponse précise aux besoins individuels, aux habitudes et à l’expérience corporelle.
Pour Eileen Gray, le paysage n’était pas un simple arrière-plan, mais une partie intégrante de l’architecture. Les terrasses, les fenêtres et les chemins furent conçus de manière à ce que la lumière, le vent, la végétation et les perspectives se transforment continuellement. La maison s’ouvre autant sur la Méditerranée que sur les montagnes de l’arrière-pays et réagit avec sensibilité au climat, au moment de la journée et aux saisons.
Tempe à Pailla fut conçu comme un lieu de concentration et de retrait — intimement lié à son environnement méditerranéen.
Eileen Gray
Eileen Gray (1878–1976) zählt heute zu den bedeutendsten Gestalterinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Designerin, Architektin und Künstlerin entwickelte sie eine eigenständige Position zwischen Art Déco, Avantgarde und Moderne.
Nach ihrem Studium an der Slade School of Fine Art in London zog Gray nach Paris, wo sie zunächst mit Lackarbeiten, Möbeln und Innenräumen internationale Aufmerksamkeit erlangte. In den 1920er Jahren eröffnete sie die Galerie Jean Désert, in der sie Möbel, Teppiche, Leuchten und Paravents präsentierte.
Eileen Gray (1878–1976) is now regarded as one of the most significant designers of the twentieth century. As a designer, architect and artist, she developed an independent position between Art Deco, the avant-garde and modernism.
After studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, Gray moved to Paris, where she first gained international recognition through her lacquer work, furniture and interiors. In the 1920s, she opened Galerie Jean Désert, where she presented furniture, carpets, lighting and screens.

Après ses études à la Slade School of Fine Art de Londres, Gray s’installa à Paris où elle acquit d’abord une renommée internationale grâce à ses travaux de laque, ses meubles et ses aménagements intérieurs. With her houses E-1027 and Tempe à Pailla, Gray developed an architecture that united functionality, movement and intimacy. Many of her works remained overshadowed for a long time by her male contemporaries. Today, Eileen Gray is considered a central figure in the history of modern architecture and design.
Avec ses maisons E-1027 et Tempe à Pailla, Gray développa une architecture associant fonctionnalité, mouvement et intimité. Nombre de ses œuvres restèrent longtemps dans l’ombre de ses contemporains masculins. Aujourd’hui, Eileen Gray est reconnue comme une figure majeure de l’histoire de l’architecture et du design moderne.

Tempe à Pailla ist bis heute in wesentlichen Teilen seiner historischen Substanz erhalten. Das laufende Forschungs- und Restaurierungsprojekt widmet sich der Sicherung des Hauses, seiner Inneneinrichtung sowie der historischen Garten- und Terrassenanlagen.
In Zusammenarbeit mit Restaurator:innen, Architekt:innen, Museen, Archiven und wissenschaftlichen Institutionen wird das Gebäude umfassend untersucht und dokumentiert.
Langfristiges Ziel ist es, Tempe à Pailla als öffentlich zugänglichen Ort für Architektur, Design und Forschung zu etablieren. To this day, Tempe à Pailla has preserved substantial parts of its historic fabric. The ongoing research and restoration project is dedicated to safeguarding the house, its interiors, and the historic gardens and terrace structures.
In collaboration with conservators, architects, museums, archives and academic institutions, the building is being comprehensively studied and documented.
The long-term goal is to establish Tempe à Pailla as a publicly accessible place dedicated to architecture, design and research. Tempe à Pailla conserve encore aujourd’hui une grande partie de sa substance historique. Le projet actuel de recherche et de restauration est consacré à la préservation de la maison, de son aménagement intérieur ainsi que des jardins et terrasses historiques.
En collaboration avec des restaurateurs, architectes, musées, archives et institutions scientifiques, le bâtiment fait l’objet d’une étude et d’une documentation approfondies.
L’objectif à long terme est d’établir Tempe à Pailla comme un lieu accessible au public, consacré à l’architecture, au design et à la recherche.
